Saints 3s V Swansea Uni - Match Report 24th Oct 15'

Result: WSLHC 0-4 Swansea Uni

This was another match with a disappointing final scoreline that did not reflect the way everyone played throughout the game.  With a full squad of sixteen and Adam Broomfield coaching and running the subs from the sideline, everybody put in a massive physical effort and did not stop trying to take the attack to the opposition.

We started the game a little slowly and had to weather quite a lot of pressure from the students before we were able to break out of our own half and start to make the play ourselves.  However, after a few minutes of pressure, the Uni girls went 1-0 up with a speculative strike from the top right of the D that found its way into the goal.  We did not let that deter us from playing the way we wanted to and gained some penalty corners, although we did not manage to score from them.  We kept pressing as much as we could, but relinquished possession high up the pitch and were then out of position, which meant that we could not prevent the students from scoring a second goal from a breakaway.

After the half-time break, the general flow of the game was end-to-end, with both teams attacking with as much pace as they could.  Our defensive unit was easily able to repel anything the students threw at them and, after much positive interplay from the forwards, we got as close to scoring a goal as we have all season:  while the ball was on its way towards the line, it hit a defender’s foot, denying Josie Brown a goal, and the umpire awarded a penalty corner, from which we did not score.

Throughout the remainder of the game, as the players started to tire, gaps opened up and while pressing forward, we got caught by another breakaway for the third goal and then a penalty corner that we did not manage to clear, making the final score 4-0 to Swansea University.

Captain Val Fender was pleased with the progress that we had made from the previous week, and the energy everyone in the squad produced.  We hope to continue improving and gain our first win in our next League game.  Many thanks to Adam for organising the substitutions and his positive attitude to the game.
