Graham Lewis

The Whitchurch Hockey Club is sad to announce that Graham Lewis, a former President of the club, passed away on Friday 24th August. Graham, who was aged 84, was of course the father of Mark (our current President and former 1st X1 Captain) together with Sally and Simon, and the husband of Mair. Mair is a life member of our club, having helped to form the St Fagans LHC with Sally.

Graham was one of the best all round sportsmen to have represented the Whitchurch Hockey Club. He was 1st X1 Captain of Whitchurch for a number of years and after serving as President for 5 years, he was made a life member. He reached the top playing cricket and played at Lords in 1981 and 1982 when the St Fagans Cricket Club played in the final of the Village Cricket Club tournament. He also played 1st team rugby for Pontypridd and was Welsh youth tennis champion.

As a teacher in Cathays High School Graham produced many of the top hockey players for the early days of the Whitchurch club including Malcolm May and Tony Lages who both went on to play for Wales.

Apart from his prowess on the sporting field Graham was an inspirational and dedicated figure for the club’s players, always known as a true gentleman who upheld the best values of playing sport. Mair was a great support to him in the later years as his health deteriorated and he was delighted when Mark became the first Whitchurch player to represent Great Britain and Simon appeared for the Whitchurch 1st team.

When the arrangements for the funeral are available we will publicise them as we are expecting a large attendance.
