Tony Rees Jones memorial match
A select XI played a memorial match on Saturday to commemorate the life of Tony Rees Jones. Tony was a stalwart of Cardiff Hockey Club and featured in numerous keenly contested games with Whitchurch over the years. Cardiff enjoyed much of the upper hand in this game, which was played in a fantastic spirit. The Cardiff side featured some legends from the past such as Channi Kaler, Gary Story, Steve Way and Steve Sparkes - some of whom haven't played for over 15 years. Mike Cleverley played in goal for Cardiff and his son Tom enjoyed scoring passed him. Andy Rhys Jones and his son Jack also played for Cardiff and contributed to a memorable and fitting game. Cardiff ran out 5-3 winners, but more importanlty some money was raised for the Stroke Association and a fitting tribute to Tony.
Wales U21 take silver in Austria
The Wales U21 squad took a silver medal and more importanly promotion to the Chanpionship in 2012 at the Trophy Tournament in Vienna. They went down 9-0 to a well-drilled Scotland side in the final. Whitchurch player Rhys Gowman was a key member of the squad.
