Exeter Uni 4-2 Whitchurch
A well contested game that wasn't reflected in the score line.
Both sides started confidently and engaged in exploratory sparring - knocking the ball around with authority and pace. Whitchurch should have broken the deadlock with a flowing move but Laith El Khatib could not apply the finish. Exeter's answer was to break in numbers and open the scoring with a cool finish.
Whitchurch rallied and pressed the students once more. They were disappointed to only be awarded a penalty corner following an incident in the Exeter goalmouth. The penalty corner came to nothing and once again Exeter broke with pace and authority, finishing off a fine move with their second goal, prior to half time.
Exter started the second peiod in a similar fashion to how they had ended the first. Moving the ball at pace and opening up Whitchurch a little too easily to secure a third goal. Now in control of proceedings Exeter extended their lead to four mid way through the second period.
With fifteen minutes remaining Whitchurch played their best hockey of the match (and the season some might say). They penned in the Exeter side, forcing them to defend for prolonged periods. Joe Naughalty broke the deadlock, converting a well-worked penalty corner move. Laith then forced a second with some persistent play, which began to rattle the home side. Buoyed on with the newly gained momentum, Whitchurch forced a number of scoring opportunities, but once again could not apply the critical finish.
A tough game against quality opposition. Not the best overall performance from Whitchurch, but still created enough to get a point.
Hassan Noor made a very positive debut - involved in much of the creative play in the Whitchurch midfield.
