Whitchurch 2-0 Cambridge University
Whitchurch moved into the top six of the Slazenger EHL South with a well-deserved 2-0 win against visitors Cambridge University on 9th March.
Whitchurch opened well, threatening the Cambridge goal with quick incisive passing, but the students, desperate for points to move away from the relegation zone, weathered the storm and worked hard defensively to contain the home attack.
In a goalless first half, with defences on top, the University’s best opportunity to score fell five minutes before half-time, but Whitchurch keeper Iwan Williams made a fine double-save to keep his goal intact. Whitchurch dominated possession in the second period, Joe Naughalty and Tom Fisher going close to scoring before Laith El Khatib broke the deadlock, fastening on to a loose ball in the circle to fire home in the 50th minute.
Whitchurch continued to press the Cambridge defence and were rewarded with a second goal when Joe Naughalty converted a penalty corner two minutes from time to seal Whitchurch’s fifth win in the last seven games and a clean sheet to boot.
