Whitchurch 0-2 Sevenoaks
With Sevenoaks riding high at the top of the table, this was always going to be a tough game for Whitchurch. Though the fist fixture between these two was a close affair.
The visitors started brightly pushing Whitchurch onto the back foot. They should have taken the lead if not for some smart goalkeeping from Whutchurch Captain Iwan Williams and some profligate finishing from the Kent side. Whitchurch could not get any meaningful possession together let alone threaten the Sevenoaks goal. Nevertheless the Whitchurch defence stood firm and the scores were level at 0-0 at the break.
The half time team talk must have had an effect as Whitchruch started with some conviction in the second period and began asking questions of the Sevenoaks goalkeeper. Once again, as has been the theme for the season Whitchurch created a number of chances but could not make the breakthrough. Whitchurch’s failings were dealt a blow mid way through the half – Sevenoaks were awarded a penalty corner, which top scorer Pete Turner despatched with some ferocity from the top of the circle.
Whitchurch continued their forays into Sevenoak’s territory, forcing some good saves from the keeper, but the Kent side always looked dangerous on the counter. The game was killed off by Sevenoaks with an open play goal late on to take an unassailable 2-0 lead. Whitchurhc had Neil Potter sinned binned with 10 minutes remaining and could not could back.
