FOREWORD
I am very honoured to be asked to put a brief foreword to this excellent publication which celebrates fifty years of Whitchurch Hockey Club. I am very pleased, as a Penarth Hockey Club man, to remember that it was my club, now nearing its eightieth birthday, which gave the then young Whitchurch club its first fixtures in its breakthrough into the top level of South Wales hockey, all those years ago. Since then many things have changed. Revolutions have taken place in hockey throughout the world which have transformed the game itself, its rules, its structures, even the surface it is played on. Whitchurch has grown to maturity during this era and has never faltered in its climb to the top. Today Whitchurch Hockey Club finds itself at the pinnacle of Welsh hockey and able to compete with the best in Great Britain and Europe. I have great affection for Whitchurch because it has never lost its sense of humour, its sense of pride and fair play. It has always been a caring club and remains so today. This care is returned by all its members in the obvious affection they have for their club. These are great attributes, not given in such depth to all hockey clubs. All this is due to the quality of the membership and its leaders, who have always made me so welcome. May the next fifty years be as successful, happy and harmonious as the last.
