YOUTH PLAYERS and PARENTS

CODE OF CONDUCT for YOUTH PLAYERS, UMPIRES, COACHES, 

Youth Players

• Players should show respect towards team members, opponents, teachers, coaches, officials and umpires.
• Players should be well-behaved when attending hockey sessions and follow the instructions of their coach/es.
• Players should avoid disrespectful behaviour – for example, swearing, using inappropriate language, using violence, intimidating behaviour, bullying, aggressive gestures. Such behaviour will NOT be accepted by SWYH.
• Umpires and Officials should be respected and their decisions accepted
• Players should ensure that they protect themselves and the safety of others in the way they play
• Players must not use a camera or a mobile phone in any changing room
• Players should wear appropriate protective gear – mouth guard and shinpads are recommended – as well as appropriate clothing.
• Should avoid using social media in a way that brings any disrepute to players, the sport of hockey and anyone else connected with the sport.

 Coaches & Umpires

• Coaches and Umpires should respect the spirit of fair play in hockey and encourage players to do the same.
• Coaches and Umpires should protect players through the application of the rules of the game and should ensure that the safety of all participants is paramount.
• Umpires should be consistent, impartial, objective and courteous.
• Coaches should show respect towards team members, opponents, parents, spectators, officials and umpires.
• Coaches have a responsibility to lead by example, reflecting such attitudes as fair play, accepting decisions made by umpires and officials.
• Coaches are responsible for the appropriate conduct of their players on and off the pitch.
• Coaches should avoid disrespectful behaviour to anyone involved in a hockey session– for example, swearing, using inappropriate language, using violence, intimidating behaviour
• Coaches must not use a camera or a mobile phone in any changing room
• Coaches are also responsible for the appropriate behaviour of spectators supporting their own team/s

Parents & Spectators

• Should encourage their child/children to play according to the rules and spirit of the game.
• Should not force an unwilling player to play
• Should support their child/children in a positive way. Swearing, ridiculing, admonishing players/officials harassment of opponents or officials and verbal abuse are all unacceptable modes of behavior.
• Show respect towards players, teachers, coaches, officials and umpires.
• Support the Association’s efforts to provide hockey for your child/children and if you can, please volunteer your help – transport to matches, administration, coaching, sponsorship.
• Make sure that your child is properly dressed/equipped to take part in hockey sessions, including having a protective mouth guard and a pair of shin pads.
• Should inform the youth officials at the relevant Hockey Club of any issues of concern about your child/children. For example, the coaches would need to know about health issues that could affect a player during hockey sessions, like asthma as well as any welfare issues. Parents are expected to inform the Child Protection Officer and Director of youth hockey about any concerns regarding bullying.
• Parents have a duty of care for their children whilst they are playing hockey. Parents should either be present
during this time or have made arrangements through relatives/friends that their child is transported to the
venue and can be looked after there if the need arose.
• Parents should respect official decisions and teach the young to do the same.
• Remember that a team’s coach/es will be directing tactics. Support should not encroach on this area

Child Protection Officer

You should all be aware that the Club has a Child Protection Officer who is responsible for all boys and girls in our Club. Any issues that you have concerning your child’s welfare at Whitchurch Hockey Club should be raised with this officer;

DISCIPLINE

As a Club we expect levels of discipline to be maintained whilst representing Whitchurch Hockey Club. Any player bringing the Club into disrepute, either on or off the field, may be subject to disciplinary action by the Club Disciplinary Committee.
