On the back from two 7-0 defeats in the 2 previous weekends it was always going to be a tough ask for a trip down to Exeter against an ISCA side who were top of the league and an ECV Hornets side that had also come down to the Championship this season.
On Saturday we faced the Hornets. Warm up was delayed due to Sat Nav issues in Craig Nevards “Green Machine” however when we had all arrived and warmed up for the match the realisation came that we had 14 players for an Exeter away trip (possibly first ever time in Whitchurch History) and that we were going to make amends for previous weeks. Unfirtunately within 10 minutes of the game starting Pete Bowles (GK) decided to rugby tackle one of the hornets players leading to a swift yellow card from the umpire. Ben Roberts then stepped in as Kicking back, donning a helmet and smock attempted to keep out the p-flick, well no surprises they scored. Following the re-start the Hornets flurried to get some shots on goal, however following some fine defending and a save by Ben no goals were conceded. A second yellow was then shown to Owen harries, still no goals from either side. Back to full strength and we conceded another 3, all from short corners. Then came some what of a resurgence as we decided we were actually so much better when we passed the ball and we were back in the game with goals coming in from Ed Goldsmith, Manyonge and somehow Chris Mills (I know it’s a shock!) but in fairness he rounded the keeper and put the ball in the goal so hats off. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and final score was 4-3. Hearty performance by the lads though and it was time to “prepare” for the game tomorrow.

Sunday morning wasn’t the best time for a number of our players (Jake Joyce and Jonny Moore) who were but a shadow of a real person and neither felt too healthy. From yesterday 3 players had to head back to Cardiff (Ted, Nevard and Bourn) allowing for the arrival of some reinforcements in the form of Gordon Howard and Rob Grounds. Game started with ISCA on the attack but a combination of some awesome defensive work (big mention to Adam Stone) and some big saves (Pete Bowles) we went into half time 0-0 which was a blessed relief. As the second half went underway some more great defending combining with some great work but Mark Holland (Irish) in the middle of the park opened up a ball to Gordon who left open in the D hammered a ball home making the goalkeeper look a little bit silly. However this lead was short lived and within 5 minutes a hopeful shot took a deflection and ended up in the net. The rest of the match was end-to-end with great opportunities missed at both ends, however again it wasn’t to be our day as ISCA scored a short corner leaving us unfortunately at the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline. However vast improvements on previous weeks and there is most definitely light at the end of the tunnel ready for Gloucester City at Home next week!
