News

Following the Senior Squads mixed results on the Saturday and Sunday’s Cup finals, on bank holiday Monday it was the turn of our youth teams.

Whitchurch U11 girls

Following the double cup success of 2013 the U11 girls were out to continue their winning ways after already winning the South Wales Cup in April 2014.  All the girls played outstanding hockey from the starting whistle and they scored the first goal after exactly 1 minute and added a further 2 goals to the score board before half time.  After half time they continued showing great team spirit and team work to add a further 3 goals making the final score line against Wrexham 6.0.

After a few minutes rest it was straight into the 2nd game against the other team from North Wales - Dysynni.  The girls again showed wonderful skills and they scored their first goal after 2 minutes from a well worked short corner.  Again the girls pushed forward to score a further 3 goals resulting in the score line being 4 .0 at half time.  The girls again continued attacking in the second half with another 3 goals to make the final score 7.0

The final match was against our strongest South Wales rivals Gwent, who had also won their other 2 matches but by less goals.  The girls only now have to draw to win the cup but this was never going to be the game plan with this squad of girls, as they had won every match from qualifiers to South Wales Finals, to Welsh finals, all without the opposition scoring against them.

The final match started the same as the 2nd with a goal scored from a short corner after 2mins.  Two more goals were scored in the first half and then a final goal was scored in the 2nd half the win this crucial match 4.0 and become WELSH CUP CHAMPIONS 2014.  This was a massive achievement.  They scored a total of 17 goals in the 3 matches and conceding none. They also won every match throughout the whole campaign.

A huge well done and thanks goes to all the children, coaches and parents linked to this age group.

Whitchurch U13 girls

The U13 girls were the last competition of the very action packed and enjoyable Hockey Wales Cup final weekend.  The Whitchurch U13 girls narrowly missed out on the South Wales Cup by the 1 and only goal scored against them by Gwent. They were determined to do their best and give 100% on the pitch, support and encourage when on the side lines, and most of all have fun.

In the first game they played Wrexham and followed the U11’s example by playing lovely passing, attacking hockey from the start. The final score was 7.0 to Whitchurch.  They then went on to play Colwyn Bay and had to show true strength and determination.  The game was a close and tough match in which Whitchurch’s team spirit and cohesion helped secure them a 1.0 victory.

Again like the U11 girls the winners of the cup all depended on the result of the final match between Whitchurch and Gwent, who had both won their other 2 matches, but with Whitchurch in the better position due to goal difference.  Yet again the U13 girls really performed, displaying brilliant skills, teamwork and executing effective set plays as practised leading up to the finals.  Gwent continued to battle and cause the Whitchurch team problems so there was no chance for Whitchurch to sit back even after scoring the first couple of goals.   The final score was 4.1 to Whitchurch in a thrilling and brilliant game of hockey displayed by both teams.  This resulted in Whitchurch U13 girls being crowned WELSH CUP CHAMPIONS 2014.  Brilliant achievement by all involved.  Well done girls.

A huge well done and thanks goes to all the children, coaches and parents linked to this age group.
