Whitchurch vs. Team Bath Buccaneers (Away) - 27/09/2014
After gaining a massive point in a hard fought home fixture against Exeter, this week, Whitchurch travelled away to Bath.
The game started quickly with Bath looking the livelier. With nice interlink play in the midfield; Bath started to exploit space that they had created. Soon they took a one, then a 2-nil lead.
Seemingly being woken up by the early loss of goals, Whitchurch started to then create something of their own. Building the play slowly from the back, a passing move down the right led to the awarding of a short corner. A drag flick from Alun Welsh found the bottom corner closing the gap to one.
In an attempt to close the holes in midfield and to condense play, Whitchurch adopted a half court press. This only managed to contain Bath for a limited time with the home team managing to slot another 2 before the half time whistle.
At 4-1, Whitchurch knew there was still all to play for in the second half if they started to play the hockey they knew then could play. However, between ill discipline and sloppy decision-making, the game became started to fall apart for the travelling team. Three quick goals late in the half sealed a 7-1 victory for Bath.
As a new team still trying to find their feet there were a few positives to take away from the loss but a lot of lessons to be learnt. There is no doubt that come next weekend Whitchurch will be a stronger, more prepared outfit because of it. They next play Barford Tigers at NHC Sophia Gardens on Sunday.
