Whitchurch Saints 2s v Haverfordwest (Saturday 11th October 2014)

Haverfordwest travelled to Cardiff on Saturday 11th October 2014 for the league fixture against Whitchurch Saints 2nds on the back of the best wishes from all of Pembrokeshire, which was broadcast live on the Owen Money radio programme on the morning of the game to ensure that the Saints were made aware that their opponents were up to the challenge.

From the push-back HFW immediately declared their intent and launched a number of early raids into the Saints half ensuring that the Saints defence were awake and up to the challenge. The Whitchurch defence stood firm and snuffed out the early attacks by HFW forwards and took the game back to the HFW half when just prior to half time, Jude, who was having a Captains performance lead the team and fired a shot into the back of the HFW goal, giving the HFW Goalkeeper no chance.  The game ebbed and flowed from one end to the other with both teams putting up a hard fight and shots on both goals.  The score at half time was 1-0 to Saints.

After half time, HFW came out with all guns blazing, launching numerous attacks on the defence and Whitchurch Goalkeeper.  Whitchurch conceded two goals within a short period of time after the start of the second half, with the score now 2-1 to HFW.  It was the experience of the senior members which lifted the spirits of the Whitchurch team and once again, their confidence grew and they began to take the game back to HFW.

Meg Atkins and Pip combined well with numerous raids into the HFW D.  As a result of their tenacity, Pip scored Whitchurch’s second goal making it 2-2 and the fight back was on.  This became a thrilling game with both HFW and Whitchurch determined to score the winning goal.  Both Goal Keepers were forced to make excellent saves with the assistance of their respective defence as each team’s attackers kept the pressure on.  Shortly before the end of the match, Whitchurch broke off from defence and took the ball to the HFW end of the pitch where again Pip and Meg Atkins combined their efforts which resulted in Meg Atkins scoring the third goal making it 3-2 to the Saints.  It continued to be a tense fight to prevent HFW from scoring an equaliser and when the final whistle blew the Saints supporters and players were relieved that a hard fought match had gone their way.  Final score 3-2 to Whitchurch Saints.  Whitchurch Saints Goalkeeper Megan Blake was voted Player of the Match by Haverfordwest.
