Match Report Sat 11th Oct: Cardiff Uni 2^nd v Whitchurch Saints 1st XI

This was the third game of the season for the Saints 1^st XI and having performed well in their opening two games the team were hoping to come away with a win.

It was the university side however that began with the greater intent, getting to the ball first and managing to find holes in the Saints press.  Katie Butler having stepped into defence in a last minute switch worked well with Emily Greenwood in their central roles to quash any would be attacks from the students.

Saints did have periods of dominating play especially through attacks on the right from Jenny SS, but were frustrated repeatedly in the D where they could not translate this pressure to goals in spite of the valiant efforts of Nia, Sara, Lloydie and Claire in the forward line. With increasing pressure late in the half a short corner yielded the first goal, Katie Butler getting a rebound from a direct hit to leave the ball sitting on the line for Noelle to tap in.

The half time team talk provoked renewed intensity and as the second half began the game opened up and the opportunities for Saints came again and again. A second goal arrived through the combined efforts of Lloydie and Kath who together worked from a very acute angle on the right side of the D to beat the keeper. The third and final goal was a clinically delivered short corner, Charlotte stopping and sending the perfect pass to Kath whose slightly raised sweep evaded the Cardiff Uni defence.

Not the fluid performance Saints were hoping for but a convincing win nonetheless.
