Whitchurch vs. Indian Gymkhana

15th February 2015

With both teams fighting for survival in a relegation scrap, Whitchurch HC hosted Indian Gymkhana at the National Hockey Centre. The game began with a tense opening 5 minutes showing promising hockey from both teams, but Indian Gymkhana broke the deadlock from a well constructed short corner. Soon after, Alex Keating played a nicely weighted ball down the right line, with Ben Thomas picking the ball up outside the 22 metre and driving with his trademark pace exploited Indian Gymkhana's thinly spread defence. Once In the 'D' Thomas eliminated a player and clinically slipped the ball through the keepers legs, leaving him a nice tap in bringing Whitchurch level to 1-1 and getting his first national league goal. The sides went in level at half time.

The start of the second half began with Indian Gymkhana immediately going on the attack which resulted in a goal. Whitchurch responded well with some sustained pressure which tested the Indian Gymkhana defence. Some great individual skill from Jake Joyce resulted in him sniffing out a short corner on the base line. A Phill Wilkinson strike was well saved by the keeper only to be lashed home by Rhys Welsh on the rebound, making the score 2-2. Immediately from the restart a lapse in concentration from the Whitchurch defence allowed the Indian Gymkhana forward time in the 'D' to finish past Iwan Williams in the Whitchurch goal. Despite some positive attacking play from Whitchurch the game ended 3-2. A much improved performance from the Whitchurch team.
