WSLHC 2s v Cardiff Uni 2s - Match Report 21st Nov '15
Result: WSLHC 2s 1 - 1 Cardiff Uni 2s
Whitchurch Saints 2s faced a tough challenge. They played against Cardiff University 2s on one of the coldest days of the year so far, and with low-level sun making play somewhat one-sided.
The squads were evenly matched: where the Saints had experience, tactics and a great run of form, Cardiff had pace and aggression.
The Saints had a shaky first half and struggled to get into an attacking position. Cardiff used this to score a breakaway goal just before half time.
In the second half, the advantage was fully in the Saints’ favour. They started playing classic Saints hockey, with short sharp passes, great pivot play from the middle screen by Cat Fenton and excellent ball carrying by Katie Thorpe and Menna Poole.
They kept pushing for the equaliser but were thwarted by aggressive counter attacking from Cardiff and some unlucky refereeing decisions. One referee saw red (or Ginge) and carded Kate Nicolson twice – both for questionable offences, leaving the Saints a player down.
But in true Saints fashion, the team pushed on and an exciting burst of play in the last five minutes led to the desired equaliser. Two short corner attempts finally led to a goal for Katie Thorpe.
The final result was 1-1.
Next week Saints 2s face Bridgend at home at 12 o’clock – all support welcome!
Goal Scorer: Katie Thorpe
