WHC Vs Truro - Match Report 19th November 2016

Result: WHC [7] Vs Truro [3]

Whitchurch welcomed Truro this Saturday for a bottom of the table clash in the wet welsh weather. We welcomed back ‘bad boy’ Rory Flutter who has missed the last few games due to suspension knowing that only 3 points would do today.

The home team started very strongly with Badger and Ows pushing through from centre back to exert a high press on the visitors. This paid off and Whitchurch won a lot of ball high up the pitch. After some good early moves it was the forward link up from Jolyon Morgan and Phill Wilkinson that allowed Wilkinson to take the ball round the keeper and finish from a narrow angle.

Not content with one goal, Whitchurch kept pushing and some great work from Jake Joyce and Seb Sheehan in the midfield allowed Jolyon Morgan to finish nicely on the turn through the keepers legs. Whitchurch looking good for 2-0 inside 10 minutes.

In more of a counter attack move, Hass in midfield intercepted a pass yet again and fed Wilkinson who slipped through Flutter for a sharp reverse finish.

We’ve tried to play a more attacking and fluid brand of hockey this year which includes defenders confidently throwing aerials.  Ows threw one into Wilkinson on the 25 who took on a couple of diving defenders and smashed it back post to make it four nil inside the first 25 minutes.

There then came a fightback from Truro who are a dangerous team going forward, and this is where Adam Broomfield in goal started to earn his Man of the Match award. Whatever Truro threw at him in the first half he kept it out, with one save in particular using the back of his heel when lying down. Our defence reacted well to second phase defence and just before the half time whistle flutter hit a reverse towards the goal that Jolyon Morgan was able to slap in from close range.

Second half Whitchurch went down to 10 men thanks to Andy Gray pushing someone over and lost a bit of structure. Truro stole 2 quick goals and there were signs of a wobble until Dough Young, arriving 50 minutes into the game, did what he does best and got a deflection just in front of the keeper to make it 6-2.

Broomfield kept out some short corners and marshalled his defence well to minimise chances for Truro who were throwing everything forward.

Wilkinson Morgan and Flutter also combined in a counter to make an easy finish into an open goal for flutter to make it 7-2. A late consolation for Truro made it 3 for them but it couldn’t dampen what was a quality 3 points for the men in blue. Plymouth away next weekend.
